PRINT DIMENSIONS AT YOUR TARGET

The calculation, without the mystery.

Print width in inches = pixel width ÷ pixels per inch. Do the same for height. Multiply inches by 2.54 for centimetres.

For example, 6000 × 4000 pixels at 300 PPI gives 20 × 13.33 inches, or 50.8 × 33.87 cm. These dimensions preserve the image’s proportions. If your frame has a different shape, cropping reduces the available pixels.

Which resolution should I choose?

300 PPI is a useful starting target for close-viewed photographs. Lower densities may be acceptable for larger prints viewed farther away. Check your print provider’s requirements. Pixel count alone cannot tell whether the original image is sharp.

PPI is not printer DPI.

PPI describes image pixels per printed inch. DPI describes printer dots. People often search for a “DPI calculator” when they need image PPI. This calculator uses pixels per inch.
